HNS Update: Expired Name Grace Period
We’re excited to announce an important upgrade to the Hedera Name Service (HNS) platform that enhances user experience and provides greater flexibility for name holders.
This feature introduces a 30-day Grace Period for names that have expired.
What’s New?
Previously on HNS, names that had expired would have immediately become available for repurchase. With this update, name holders now have a 30 day window to renew their expired names.
Expired names will show with an exclamation point on the right hand side of the My Domains screen in place of the clock symbol:
Entering into the details section of an expired name will now show how many days are left in the grace period for that particular name:
Why Did We Implement This Change?
Life can be varied and unpredictable. This grace period serves as a safety net, ensuring that a momentary lapse, whatever the reason may be, doesn’t result in the potential loss of your valued digital identity on Hedera.
How Does It Work?
The process is simple and user-friendly:
- If your name expires, it automatically enters a 30-day grace period.
- During this period, you retain the exclusive right to renew your name, provided you do not sell the name to another account on secondary marketplaces. Only the account holder of a given name has the right to extend it.
- The renewal process is exactly the same as it was before a name fell into expiry — no special process is required. For detailed instructions on how to renew names on HNS, see here:

Please note, a new NFT and serial number will be created for names that have fallen into the grace period and are subsequently renewed during this 30-day window.
No Additional Costs
We’re pleased to currently offer this added convenience to our users free of charge while a name is still within its grace period. Renewal fees remain the same as they would have been before expiry for the current holder of a given name.
What This Means For You As A Name Holder
This upgrade provides several benefits:
- Peace of mind: You don’t have to worry about immediately losing your name(s) if you’ve forgotten to renew on time.
- Flexibility: If you’re temporarily unable to access your account, you have some extra time to do so.
- Convenience: You are able to renew your expired name at any time during its 30 day grace period.
